A Historic Undertaking

The efforts of Lions in the field of vision are expansive and well documented. Our SightFirst program has played a key role in reducing global blindness—building comprehensive and sustainable eye care systems, including projects that deliver eye care services, build or strengthen eye care facilities, train professionals and build awareness about eye health in underserved communities.

SightFirst

  • Launched in 1990
  • Helped 30 million people improve or restore their vision
  • Investing US$415 million to extend services to even more people throughout the world
  • US$6 is the average cost to help restore a person’s vision or prevent blindness

Vision for All

Since 1990, SightFirst has played a major role in helping restore and improve the vision of millions around the world.

  • More than US$356 million approved for over 1,330 projects in 102 countries
  • 9.1 million cataract surgeries performed to restore sight
  • 1,292 eye centers and training institutions built, expanded or equipped
  • 1.8 million professional eye care and community health workers trained
  • 164 million doses of Zithromax® distributed to control trachoma
  • 218 million doses of Mectizan® distributed to halt the progression of onchocerciasis

Duxbury Lions & District 33S provides over thousands of pairs of sunglasses & readers for countries where eye care is not available. The glasses are collected locally, sorted, washed, and shipped wherever needed.  Lions clubs are making a difference in the world!
